
Emelda (Imane) Lawson Bekkal is the Co-Founder of Chicago Muslims Green Team (CMGT). Before working on CMGT, Emelda (Imane) was a Program Manager at Northeastern Illinois University. She has 20 years of experience managing educational programs and providing innovative educational programming to hundreds of teachers, parents and students in the Chicago Public Schools.
A native Chicagoan, Emelda (Imane) grew up on the southside of Chicago. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Arts from the University of Minnesota and a Master’s in Inner City Studies in Education.
She loves nature and has a passion for sustainable community engagement that promotes human development and environmental justice. While living in Seattle, Emelda (Imane) was a Core Volunteer for Seattle Tilth and her local Pea Patch, helping local residents learn the principles of urban farming.
Emelda (Imane) is concerned about the climate crisis and through CMGT spreads her passion for environmental justice through programs that raise awareness of eco-friendly living. She is dedicated to promoting “Green” living in her faith community because it a core value within her Islamic faith tradition.

We connect Chicago Muslims and the greater community to issues of environmental justice and spreads awareness about an Eco-friendly lifestyle based on Islamic teachings.
